If a MacBook M1 isn't recognizing an external display, you can try these steps:
Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Displays
Press and hold the Option to make the Detect Displays button appear
Click Detect Displays
Unplug and replug the display
Check that the cable is securely connected to the correct port
Check that the correct cable is being used
Check the resolution and brightness settings
Update adapter software if applicable
