The day I ran out of ink, I tried to insert a new unopened color cartridge. It would not work. Of course, it had been in the desk drawer way over 30 days since I had not been printing as much as usual for the last 10 months because my husband and I took responsibility for a four year old child through DHR. I only use the correct cartridge from either HP or purchase at Walmart. In either case, there was no return. I just learned a lesson. I can't purchase the ink until I am so low that I have to purchase it. It will not keep even if it is still sealed in the original plastic bag.

How much does ink really cost to manufacture and fill a cartridge? HP isn't fooling anyone about not being gouged for replacement cartridges. I can print a document for half the price at a print kiosk. I Will look to another brand of printer when my current printer needs replacing.

Despite printing in both black and white and color, the inks are evenly used throughout the life of the cartridges.

Can you put a black ink cartridge where the color cartridge normally goes. I VERY SELDOM NEED COLOR INK.

Hello. Thanks for your question. You cannot replace the tricolor ink cartridge with a black ink cartridge. You can use your printer in single-cartridge mode. That means you can take out the tricolor ink cartridge. And the printer will go into single cartridge mode automatically so you can print with the black ink cartridge.
